10 Point Energy Saving Checklist

Here are some simple measures you can put into action today to help you save energy and money.

  1. Turning your thermostat down by 1ºC could cut your heating bills by up to 10 percent and save you around £30 per year.
  2. Is your water too hot? Your cylinder thermostat shouldn't need to be set higher than 60ºC/140ºF.
  3. Close your curtains at dusk to stop heat escaping through the windows.
  4. Always turn off the lights when you leave a room.
  5. Don't leave appliances on standby and remember not to leave appliances on charge unnecessarily.
  6. If you're not filling up the washing machine, tumble dryer or dishwasher; use the half-load or economy programme.
  7. Only boil as much water as you need (but remember to cover the elements if you're using an electric kettle).
  8. A dripping hot water tap wastes energy and in one week wastes enough hot water to fill half a bath, so fix leaking taps and make sure they're fully turned off!
  9. Replace your light bulbs with energy saving recommended ones: just one can reduce your lighting costs by up to £78 over the lifetime of the bulb - and they last up to 12 times longer than ordinary light bulbs.
  10. Visit the Energy saving Trust web-site www.est.org.uk or call 0800 915 7722 for free impartial advice on how to save 20% of the energy you use every day.

You would also benefit from the following changes specific to your home.

  1. Purchase "A-rated" domestic appliances when replacements are needed.
  2. Fit low energy lightbulbs, they cost a little more but last longer and use less energy.
  3. Make sure you regularly check the heating pattern of your heating programmer to ensure that it stays in line with the current occupancy of the house. Make sure the programmer does not accidentally get set to, or left on CONSTANT by mistake. If there is a power outage, check you programmer has not lost its schedule or the clock changed.
  4. Make sure that thermostatic radiator valves are set appropriately for the occupancy of the room.
